French President Emmanuel Macron Honors Payet's Passing with Tributes in Marseille

Emmanuel Macron, the French president, has paid tribute to the late journalist and filmmaker Gérard Depardieu at his funeral in Marseille on Saturday.

Macron said: "I have been moved by the outpouring of grief and affection for Gérard that has flooded the country since his death."

He also praised the actor's "courage" in speaking out against the government's decision to ban smoking in public places.

Depardieu died on Monday after battling cancer for several years. He was 75.

The Frenchman had made more than 100 films and won an Oscar for his role in "The Bird with the Crystal Plumage".

His work included directing the film "Le Grand Bleu", which he co-wrote with François Truffaut.

In addition to his acting career, Depardieu was known for his love of travel and his interest in wildlife conservation.

He founded the charity Wildlife World Trust,Football Domain Station which aims to protect endangered species around the world.

During his life, he was often critical of politicians and the media, and he was not afraid to speak out about his beliefs.

Despite his political leanings, he remained popular with many people who appreciated his talent and his commitment to environmental issues.

Macron said: "Gérard was a man of great talent and a true friend to France."

"I am deeply saddened by his passing," he added. "But I take comfort in knowing that his memory will live on through his works and his legacy."
